The Book of Numbers: Day 16

A Worshipful Journey Through the Book of Numbers

Four hundred years of compromise, sin, suffering and darkness at the hands of evil authorities. Israel’s only way to be healed is to come out of slavery and into the freedom of the Lord’s authority. Picture yourself when reading of Israel. As you follow our study through the often overlooked book of Numbers, you will see how God rehabilitates and frees broken people.

Day 16: The Levites

The word coming from the mouth of God set the stage for a widespread panic. The last verses of Numbers 17 portray a people coming face to face with their own disobedience. They failed to obey the word of the LORD despite all his good advances and all his patient allowances. The people, who had spent so much time defending their rebellion, realized the weight of punishment that their constant disbelief deserved, and their cries rang out, “Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, shall die. Are we all to perish?”

In Chapter 18:1-2 of Numbers, God speaks to Aaron and proclaims once again their call and purpose, and reminds them that their role and ministry before the people and among the people Is to “bear their iniquity.” This statement frames all of Numbers 18. As you read about the Levites and the priestly ministry again, consider how every act done by them on behalf of the people was to “bear their iniquity.”

Consider then your role as priests before our High Priest, Christ, in heaven. Consider Christ’s role in saving you and bearing your iniquity daily—beyond what you may even realize is offered to and for you. Consider also your role as his servant; to go into the world and bear the burdens of those needing relief.
