Hi David, I'm one of the founders of the RESOUNDworship site, thanks for the kind words! I just came across this old post and wondered whether you've seen the new site? Same address, www.resoundworship.org, but we've made a multitude of improvements, enhanced the look of the site, made it more interactive and so on. Hope you like it!

It's unfortunate that so many of us consider the metronome/click track as too elementary and avoid it. Thanks for reminding me of this useful skill-builder!

David and Kevin,
Just checked out the Podcast, great stuff! This is my first one and I'll be back for sure. Just wanted to drop by and give you guys some more info on Ableton Live. I'm an Ableton Live Certified Instructor and Ableton Dealer and have used Ableton in Worship for the past 8 years. You mentioned some of the great features of Ableton Live, but I thought it might be great to share with your listeners the 3 different versions of Ableton Live.

Ableton Live Intro which is the entry level version of Ableton Live. It's only $99 and works great for most people starting out with loops. The next version up is Live 8 which starts at $450 for download and goes up for a boxed version. The mac-daddy version of Live is Live Suite which starts at $699 for download. It's also important to note that Ableton makes it really easy to start with Intro and work your way to Live 8 and save some money with their upgrade pricing.

Live is great because of the flexibility it provides, and $99 to get started is pretty incredible! Let me know if you guys have any questions or if I can help with anything, Live or Loop related. Thanks again for the Podcast and keep up the good work.

"The week before I had about 15 people come up to me and express that the sound was too quiet and that they didn’t want to sing out because they didn’t want the people around them to hear them singing."

People don't like that, but that's what corporate worship is all about--- worshipping together. It's why we don't sit at home with headphones watching TV worship services. If the sound is so loud that you can't hear the person next to you singing, then what you have is a concert, not a worship service. Each person can be worshipping personally, just as they can at a concert while silently listening to music and praising God with their thoughts, but it's not the same as a church service.

Thanks Sam, those are some great points. I understand exactly what you're saying. My question is, have we not come up with another option because there isn't one or because we haven't been creative enough, or worked hard enough, etc - to find something else.

I think visual aids are good things. But if someone lacks great communication skills, it's like dressing up a dog. You can put a bumble bee costume on the dog for Halloween, but it's still a dog. I think that there are times in the church when we sacrifice great communication for other skills - which are also very important.

Like I said, I don't have an answer in my mind. I don't have an alternative, I just wonder if there is one and we just haven't been diligent enough to find it.

Like I said, I don’t have an answer in my mind. I don’t have an alternative, I just wonder if there is one and we just haven’t been diligent enough to find it.

If your refrigerator breaks, you fix it or replace it with a new refrigerator. But, you don't go and buy another microwave to replace the broken refrigerator. I believe sermon is still an effective way to communicate God's word with the people of God if it is done right by the right person. Even with all the technological advancements, communication between people didn't really change all that much. We communicate through visual, speach, written words, and touch. Speach is still one of the main ways to communicate. We still talk to each other, right? Txting and e-mail is efficient as written communication but you don't get all you get from actual conversations like tone of the voice, gestures, and expressions. All these reasons are why pastors still preach and why people still come to hear them. There is something special about an effective preacher wielding the Word of God, it's POWERFUL. Same message spoken by another wouldn't carry same effect. The person delivering the message matters. Also, you mentioned that the music changed but we still have music in worship, right? Same words that praise our God, but different tune. It's same with sermons. The reason you couldn't think of an alternative to sermon is because there really isn't an alternative. If there were, it would have been tried. Even the most contemporary churches have sermons. Wouldn't they have asked the question you are asking? Sure, they have. The question is how can we better deliver the message of God to the people? So they use visual aids, videos, outlines, dramas, and such as you mentioned, but there really isn't something that can completely replace human speach. It's just too powerful and effective. Not just in Christian terms but generally. Since there really isn't an alternative, preachers just need to prepare better, know their congregation better, know the Scripture better, be filled with Holy Spirit, and simply deliver the Message given to them by God and not their own ideas and agendas. Same Word of God, but spoken to the people in a way that connects with them. That is the job of the preacher since the beginning. What do you think?

[...] There’s only one way to describe this podcast – AWESOME! Seriously. And it has nothing to do with us, and everything to do with Chris Vacher of Worship Rises.
Thanks for the feedback Todd! I am not sure where I land on this yet. I do think we need to teach God's word and teach people to live by the principles that lie within.

However, my question lies more within the realm of how we learn. In our natural state, when we seek to learn things how do we learn them?

David, Thanks for asking the question. Too many churches have sacred cows that they are unwilling to even consider touching because that is the way it has always been.

Personally, I love our Sunday sermons, but I see them as a starting point for conversation with my wife, friends, other Christ-followers, or even those who aren't Christ-followers. It is through these conversations that I grow the most because I am now personally interacting with the Word of God, which includes re-reading and studying passages preached on, as opposed to merely listening to a someone speaking.

So maybe it is not that "sermonizing" should be done away with but rather the way we view the purpose of sermons.

Thanks Mark! I love doing it. There is so much we can learn and share with one another. If nothing else happens, other than we all learn from each others mistakes, that would be great. But there's so much more than that too. Mentoring & networking. Leadership & discipleship. I've learned so much since I've been doing this!

I should just go "ditto" to windbag's comments and questions up there shouldn't I.

Just FYI, great newer song on the same theme as your last one is Where You Go, I'll Go by Brian & Jenn Johnson. Awesome song.

Some excellent songs in your list. That's sad when finances force you to make decisions you wouldn't otherwise make. I trust that your pastor was able to find something else. Is he leaving the fellowship or just stepping down as a paid minister? That's a hard thing, I'm sure.

I love the song "Alive forever Amen"! I heard it a few years ago when I was serving at a church with a team that was not strong enough to attempt it, but I saw it on your setlist and went, "oh yeah! that awesome song!" So I'll try it at my current church and see what happens! Thanks for sharing your set list!

I'm very interested in your "phases" of worship leadership. I too really believe in empowering others in worship, as difficult as it may seem some time, it seems like a natural way to help grow the church at large.

Sorry for your trouble with non-show team members, but it looks like your set was still very good. Thanks for your honesty because we have all gone through those moments, so we understand the frustration you probably felt.

As per the request for suggestions, I'm sure that you have already thought of this one, I Can Only Image by MercyMe would fit with your theme, or maybe even the old song In The Sweet By And By.

Great set. Love the set list song title flow: Rest In Your Peace > Center > Hungry > Jesus Paid it All >Breathe. Musically, cool also! Curious about how Rest in Your Peace sounds - is it a faster song? Blessings!

I found myself singing through your whole setlist.

Do you usually just have one song as a response to the sermon? Or do you mix it up every week?

We had a choir for awhile and we struggled with getting enough people to participate. Everyone wanted to do special service choir(Christmas & Easter) but no one wanted to sing in the choir on a weekly basis. So we finally did away with the weekly choir for awhile and now we just do special service choir. It seems to work as we had a good number who committed to the Christmas Choir. I would love to figure out how to get people interested in singing in the choir weekly!

Do your people seem to enjoy it?

Your Grace Is Enough. I've been banned from leading that one, because I can't keep the groove. Now that we added another guitar player, maybe he can drive it and I can lead it now. Good list.

I feel your pain on stage reset after a concert. It takes alot of work to get things back to normal.

Yeah, we did all the music at the end (after the message). We've done that from time to time; it's different but also a great way for people to respond to truth. After all: that's really a huge part of worship; our response to the truth of a Holy God.

The hard thing is that it was Daylight Saving Time that Sunday, so everyone in church was a little tired and sluggish... it might have helped if we did a couple songs in the beginning to engage people a little. But it was still cool doing things different :)

beautiful the blood by Fee - great song. So huge. We jack with the bridge a little and start it off soft and I sing down an octave then slowly crank it up. It really rips some faces off.
