Kevin’s Weekend Review: 3-15-09

Hi everyone!  I’ve been reading some of the discussion on church choirs (from David’s Weekend Review and comments).  I think it’s cool that churches are thinking about choirs and how to strategically use them.  I personally am not much of a “choir person”… we’re actually not even doing a choir this Easter (which is a first for our church).  How cool that God makes each church and each leader unique to bring flavor to the Body of Christ.  In other words, some churches (like David’s) are doing choir for the first time to do something different; and then other churches (like mine) aren’t doing choir for the first time as a way of doing things different.  LOL!  You got to appreciate the diversity of the local church.

FYI: David and I recorded a whole Podcast episode awhile back on church choirs.  Check it out and jump in on the conversation! http://www.worshipministrycatalyst.com/?p=224

Our Sunday Service was again led this week by one of our co-leaders: Rachel.  I tasked her with finding some creative ways of doing the service, and she stepped up to the challenge!  I have been encouraged by the response and feedback I’m getting from the congregation: people seem to enjoy seeing others lead even if it means the music is different or not as polished.  This has been a great strategic decision to help with our mission statement of empowering other leaders in our church.

So, here’s what the service looked like:

  • Welcome / Call to Worship (Rachel)
  • Promises (a great Jared Anderson song that not enough people know)
  • Veggie Tale Video Clip (from the story of Abraham and Sara dealing with God’s promise)
  • Above All(classic Lenny LaBlanc)
  • Rescue (another Jared Anderson song; this one is more familiar as it was covered and made famous by New Song)
  • I Surrender All (hymn with a cool guitar groove that Rachel worked out)
  • Testimony time (One of our youth went to India for a month)
  • Offering song: Amazing Grace (This was cool: Rachel sang with her sister, her mom, and her grandmother: 3 generations were on stage doing this quartet arrangement of Amazing Grace… it was powerful!)
  • Message on God’s Promises: Hebrews 6
  • Closing / Transition into Annual Business Meeting
