I know what you mean about the guitar thing, brother. There are a bunch of songs that our congregation sings that simply don't have any keyboard in them, and in the interest of sticking to the feel of the original version, I often find myself banging out chords on my Ibanez Artwood acoustic-electric or grinding out bar chords with plenty of distortion on my Fender Telecaster. (We played "Glory" by Casting Crowns last weekend. Talk about ridiculous overdrive in worship!)

I'm a keyboardist, and as such, I can really drive the band rhythmically on the Roland V-Combo. Sometimes I feel ridiculous with a guitar strapped on because it's just not who I am. Sometimes I think I'd be better off just getting out from behind the keyboard and concentrating 100% on the VOCAL instead of making myself uncomfortable by playing guitar. We'll see what happens THIS weekend when we play "Let God Arise" by Chris Tomlin. Another heavy overdrive guitar song, to be sure.

Blessings,
B.J.

"I’m really digging Beautiful the blood."

Ditto! Heard that song at Catalyst last year and instantly took it personally. For some reason I haven't put it in our rotation yet, though. Your setlist has just pushed me to get it on the schedule. Thanks!

Incidentally, I've tried to keep myself to about six new songs a year. How often do you inject new music? Just started using "Savior" by Ross Parsley, and now I have this personal standard that says I have to wait two months for another new one... :)

Glad to have you back in the swing of things. Do you guys use a metronome or a click track of any kind? We've found that helps alot. Very soon, I'm hoping we can go to using loops with the worship time to get rid of the annoying "Metro Gnome" in our ears.
Beautiful the Blood does get aggressive towards the end. Great set.

We ended with Mighty to Save this week. That's funny that you mention feeling the need to be strong on the instrument...I'm trying to rope myself in and play less, letting the others carry things for the majority of the time.
